Sorry it’s been a while…

A quick update: When Sam came home after his surgery he was doing great the first day and a half but then went back to the hospital for another week. šŸ™ I was having to give him a nasty Amikacin shot once a day with fluids under the skin, that was bad enough but he was also forming quite a bit of fluid at the base of his incision ā€“ it was a hard decision taking him back but I knew they were better equipped and trained to deal with whatever Sam may need. He had a bit of a rough time at the hospital and ended up having to have the fluid drained, it just wouldnā€™t go away. Once he came home the second time, I thought it was over for my Sam… He wouldn’t eat, he wouldn’t/couldnā€™t move and he just wasn’t himself so I took him back to see his doctor, again, and I guess he just wanted one last good-bye from her… He ate for her and walked around just fine; he perked up and was ready to head back to the ranch just in time for Christmas! We’ve been back in South Texas since Dec. 20th and all seems well, except Sam seems to be a little bit more spoiled than ever. (If that could be possible!) I have some pictures but havenā€™t downloaded them yet; Iā€™ll get them posted soon.

I would try to see if Sam would say a few words but he is curled up in bed with the covers halfway over him snoring right now!! He looked up once when he saw me open my laptop in bed and gave me a dirty lookā€¦heā€™ll get over it. šŸ™‚

I’m home!

Hi, itā€™s Sam and I’m home! Well, I’m home at our house in Houston; we live in South Texas on a ranch most of the time. The ranch is where life is most fun (city life isnā€™t for me)!! Even though mom and dad don’t let me do all the things I love to do anymore (since I broke my foot) I still have a really big yard to run and play in and sometimes when we walk over to the lakes (and when mom’s not watching) I jump in and take a swim!

My breed (even though a mix) may be rare, it’s not by accident. I have a GREAT nose and am strong and agile. I use to track wounded deer and boy was I good at it!!! Maybe, if I can prove myself on 3 legs, they’ll let me go out in the field again…maybe?

I have to admit so far this 3-leg thing doesnā€™t seem so bad, I get around just fine. (Of course the drugs are pretty good too, maybe thatā€™s why this seems not so bad!?!?) The only thing that totally sucks is I canā€™t jump on the bed or sofaā€¦thatā€™s not cool ā€“ please tell me Iā€™ll get that figured out! And, Iā€™m not quite sure how Iā€™m going to knock on the door when Iā€™m ready to come back in from being outside or need to go outsideā€¦for some reason I think my dad is happy about that. He calls it scratching; I call it knockingā€¦whatā€™s his problem?

My sister, Neely, sheā€™s a prissy Aussie, isnā€™t quite sure what to think. I suspect she’s thinking, ā€œGreat, Samā€™s going to get all the attentionā€¦AGAIN!ā€ Iā€™ve had my medical problems, I donā€™t blame her. 4 years ago some fencing contractors driving on the ranch too fast ran over me; I was in the hospital for a long, long time and then back and forth for a while after that. I had to have skin grafts and all kinds of not so fun stuff with that injury ā€“ which was on my back right legā€¦ Then 2 years ago, as we were headed out to the field to find a wounded deer, I fell (long story my mom doesnā€™t like to talk about) and broke all the bones in my foot. I think my mom gave you the run down of that terrible injury, which landed me here.

Whew, Iā€™m tired! My doctor said I need to take it easy so I think Iā€™ll see if I can talk mom into helping up on the sofa and see if I can snooze for a while. Itā€™s been fun telling you a little about me; I think my mom is posting more picsā€¦she takes A LOT of pictures.

Get to pick Sam up today!

Nurse said Sam was wagging his tail this morning and eating like a horse; I get to pick him up this afternoon! I’ll post pics of my new and “improved” Sam later this evening. By the way he is a Catahoula Leopard/Black Mouth Cur mix – I personally think he is the most handsome puppy dog ever. Of course I am his mommy and am probably a little biased… Iā€™m sure heā€™ll be excited to tell his own story once he gets home.

Darn MRSA!!

Today Sam had his front left leg amputated.Ā  Two years ago Sam (severely) brokeĀ all of his metatarsal bones in his left foot; he had to have plates implantedĀ to repair them.Ā  By the time those bones started to heal properly the ligament in his joint (what would be our wrist) had blown so badly there was no way to repair it.Ā  The plates were taken off of his metatarsal bones and 2 new plates were then placed over the joint area to fuse the joint together.Ā  To make a very long story short, that surgical sight contracted the MRSA staph infection.Ā  We fought the infection aggressively and for a year and a half we thought we had won. Until last week, Sam’s skin broke for no apparent reason.Ā  My initial thought was one of the screws was trying to come out, which I knew was going to be bad news.Ā  MRSA can go dormant and if undisturbed, can sometimes be fine.Ā  Turns out it was not a screw trying to pop out, it was just the MRSA causing the problem.Ā  Our best option was to amputate the leg and hopefully be rid of this 2 year old injury and its nasty staph infection once and for all.Ā  Sam has the best doctor we could ask for and I know she would only lead us in the right direction.Ā  She had the privilege of caring for him 4 years ago when he got hit by a pick-up truck. Needless to say, ā€œSam I Amā€ (named that by his doctor, it use to just be Sam) is a little accident proneā€¦Ā

Deciding to amputate was one of the hardest decisions I think I’ve ever made; but after visiting the tripawds web-site today, I admit I feel better about it!Ā  Iā€™m not sure what all to expect in the coming days, weeks and months, but after 2 major injuries in the last 4 years, I think we can handle whatever comes our way.Ā  Or, at least I hope we canā€¦.
